Excerpt

“I am sorry to hear it. Is it some type of curse placed on your family?” I did not know him, but the thought of his death caused a brutal piercing in my gut.
“Curse? Yeah, I guess you could say that. It is an old and long story. Maybe I will tell you about it some other time. Can I ask you something?”
“Anything.” I did not know why, but I could hide nothing.
“If you’re real, and I’m real, how is right now even possible?”
“Fate. The Gods and Goddesses have decided we should meet, and this is the only way.”
“Okay, say you’re right. Why can’t we meet for real?”
“I do not know where you are, but it is worlds apart. We can never be together in the real world.”
“That’s pretty final. Haven’t you heard of airplanes? They fly all over the world.”
“I am sorry, you do not understand. Anything more would result in your death. My people are not cruel, but we no longer have tolerance for humans. Our mating would be a death sentence.”
“Oh, I get it. I’m good enough to have unworldly sex with, but not good enough to arouse in real life. Cold, lady. Really, cold.” He turned and walked away.
“Wait! You never told me your name.”
“No, I didn’t, and I don’t plan to, either. You can just blow off.”
I flinched. “Wait! Please. I am sorry. I do not make the rules, I just live by them.”
“What do you mean ‘just live by them’?” He did not turn, but at least stopped walking away from me. “The real world doesn’t follow out-of-date rules. Where are you from?”

“A place you’ve never heard of. Where rules of the old still apply. You may not wish to believe it, but I am a Princess and have more rules to follow than most.”

“A dream Princess, from a dream world, then. What about then? Or now? Why give me my deepest desire, only to take it away?”
“That is for the Gods to know and for us to find out. Just accept this gift for what it is. The last of my people to break the law of mating with a mortal was punished, and the mate killed.”
“Gods! Mate! As in what we did?”
I could only nod. Who was he that he would refer to the ‘Gods’ as I had? Was I wrong, was he Fay?
“Are you all right? You seem upset or scared.”
The tenderness in his voice struck like a harp string and brought tears to my eyes. “I am fine, but you must understand we can never go any farther. We must never meet.” I suspected, unless we accidentally ran into each other on my journey, all this worry meant very little. But his beliefs still filled me with concern.
“Well, if this is all we can ever have, I guess we should make the best of it. My name is Kyle.”
“Hello, Kyle.” Now why did I say that? “I am sorry. It is a bit trivial to say hello now.”
