Immortal Emerald La Roe has been alive for 300 years. She is currently operating her own paranormal agency under an alias with the help of her dear friend Katherine. Emerald knows she has been cursed and once a year loses her powers. Emerald’s life soon turns upside down when Katherine is murdered and the dreams of a goddess named Morrigan begin. Her lover, Maxwell Howard, a werewolf, is also under the same curse as Emerald after a blood sharing experience. When Emerald’s dead husband Stefan O’Duff reappears as a cursed immortal after so many years, Emerald swears revenge on the man who long ago abandoned her and cursed her to the fate she now endures. Stefan now offers a possible solution that may end their terrible curse, but it involves an intimacy with the man Emerald has sworn to kill. La Roe’s is an absorbing, well crafted first novel for Dee Owen’s. Ms. Owen’s takes her reader into the lives, past and current, of her many unique characters who readers will come to care for. La Roe’s, told in first person from Emerald’s point of view that gives the story a more intimate feel, and offers not only a magical story but a lovely romance element as well.

Victoria: Gathering Storm, is the fifth installment in my serial saga just released September 19. This series is a little different from what readers are used to because it’s an ongoing story – not in the sense of cliffhanging endings. Each book does tell its own story complete with ending, but the next begins where the last ended. That’s why each book comes with a strong recommendation for reading in order. The first four books were loosely based on themes of fairy tales or beloved stories, i.e., Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, The Pied Piper, and Little Red Riding Hood. These tales are situated against a backdrop of modern day knights and heroes, witches, elves, berserkers, psychics, demons, vampires, werewolves, and more. While that may sound silly or juvenile, or both, I assure you the series is neither.

EXCERPT ONE

Approaching him, Kaitlyn felt thankful for her heels and for the nanometer of height advantage, they provided her. She’d judged him to be just over six feet, and with her heels, she stood an inch above that. It wasn’t much but she’d take it. Gesturing to his glass, she asked, “What do I have to do to get one of those?”

“Use those long legs of yours to walk across the room, pick up the bottle, tip it to roughly a ninety degree angle and pour the contents into a glass of your choosing,” he replied.

“How long did it take you to become this much of an asshole?” she asked.

“Grant, pour Kaitlyn a drink and stop being difficult,” Margaret commanded as she walked through the room.

Kaitlyn watched his jaw firm. In his eyes, she saw a flash of several emotions—irritation, resignation but above all, she saw the love and indulgence he held for his mother. Maybe he wasn’t all bad.

He moved toward the bar and returned in a moment with a glass of bourbon for her, no ice.

She smiled, remembering what Thomas always said about watering down perfectly good bourbon. “Thank you.”

“So, do you wear those heels because you feel insecure or because you want to make men feel insecure?” The question was asked with a smile which didn’t quite reach his eyes, but the dimples were there.

Dee’s Thoughts – The Sugar Cookie Sweetheart Swap – Sugar And Spice by Kimberly Kincaid

I am absolutely in Love with Pine Mountain! I got my copy of Sugar Cookie Sweetheart Swap and loved each of the stories so much I decided to savor them slowly ;). I Spent my nights curled up with 3 funny women and 3 melting hot men, and will do so again before Christmas.

I laughed, awed and definitely felt withdraws when the stories ended. I have not been entertained so thoroughly in a very long time, I only wish there was more of Clara, Lily and Kate to read.

I highly recommend getting this book, making the recipes found in it and having a drool cloth handy for the Swoon Worthy Men in it.

I have found a new favorite Author to follow in Kimberly Kincaid and a new place to dream about… Pine Mountain. If you have not gotten your copy yet I highly suggest doing so, its a lovely way to start off this holiday season and definitely worth reading again!
