Author’s Note

In last week’s comments, I mentioned giving Stefan a chance to come forward. Since the book is written in 1st POV we have to rely on Emerald reading from Stefan’s journal to get a look inside what he is thinking.

Stefan was initially the main male of the story but Emerald really does not like him for a large portion of the book. When writing the story I realized that unless something changed Stefan and Emerald were never going to reconcile.

Little did I know that Stefan’s journal would sway one heart, Max, which as we know has caused several changes to occur that shouldn’t have (or so I thought).

Since I hate getting lost while reading a book and this excerpt is combining different portions from several pages, I have decided to add a little bit of author guidance.

In the excerpt below, we start with Stefan’s journal, Morrigan mixing in again and end with Emerald’s acceptance, well to the potential cure anyway.

Blurb

When Emerald La Roe ran away 300 years ago, she had not planned to return. However, after repeated dreams from Goddess Morrigan, Emerald finally realizes she has no choice. Emerald not only finds a magical sword waiting for her, but her dead husband also. It seems Stefan O’ Duff wants’ reconciliation and help to cure the curse they share.

Emerald would rather see him dead than be with him again, she has someone else to consider though. Her new love, Maxwell Howard a werewolf, who through sharing blood with Emerald, now faces the same fate as Emerald and Stefan. For the cure to work, Emerald has to put her hatred of Stefan aside and consent to share his bed again.

Can Emerald put 300 years of anger aside to save them or will she sacrifice all their futures and kill him as she swore to do?

Excerpt

Stefan’s Journal
1703
How do you tell the person you love; they are dying? What will she say or do when she finds out the man she loves, and his witch poisoned her? Oh, my love what have I done?
I didn’t have the heart to tell her, and have tried to stay away from her, even though the gods know it is killing me.
Kiaran is furious I am taking Em home and without her, but I don’t care, Em’s happiness means everything to me, and it is all I have left to give her.
Watching my wife sleeping for the last time, I wished I could take her place, but I cannot, her death is going to kill me.
My Em is gone and life is not worth living, I shall never see her lovely face again. Oh, how I wished I could join her, with her beside me, my heart of stone beat with life, but now it is as cold as her grave.
1705
James the Duke of White Hall came to see me today, he was still in anguish over losing Em. He even told me that someone came and took her body when she passed away six months ago. She has been gone for over a year now though, I sent him away and told him to never return. I live in enough pain from her loss to add his to it or play his delusion-based mind games. I have prayed and will continue to do so, for her family to find peace.
1803
It has been a hundred years since my Em passed away, and it still feels as though it was yesterday. Even when I sleep at night, I still feel her presence, at first, it was comforting, but now it only causes more pain. I know it is only my heart and mind playing tricks on me. There have been no more bridal balls since my Em, and there never will be again.

(This scene takes place a little after Emerald and Max were reading Stefan’s journal… and is back to Emerald’s POV)
Emerald is in the garden at this point and having a conversation with the Goddess Morrigan.

“I will tell you nothing short of a child with the prince will break this curse, not your death or anyone else. Therefore, I offer this advice, put your anger and hatred behind you, it weakens you and those you love. The Prince has also suffered greatly in his life, you must remember he was the one who had to bury you, and carry the guilt around, believing it was his fault.”
(Stefan has come upon Emerald after Morrigan has left)
“Who were you talking to just now?” Stefan asked walking toward me.
“I take it privacy also means something different to you than it does me?”
“You were out here so long. I was afraid you ran away. I also just wanted to talk in private with you, if that is all right with you, of course?”
I thought of what Morrigan had just said before answering him, I must have taken too long because he began to walk away. “Stefan wait, I’m sorry, and you are right we need to talk. Why did you never tell me the truth? You do know that you crushed my heart, don’t you? I knew what you had done and thought when we came back here without Kiaran you would tell me. I have lived through hell and back because of this curse, the worst was when our son died, and you had left me to deal with it alone.” I had thought I couldn’t cry or hurt anymore, but I was wrong, again.
